Terms of service

These terms apply when you use Matey on the web at mateytheapp.com or in the iOS app. Matey is run by Sergei Brit, an individual based in Cyprus (“we”, “us”). By creating an account or using Matey, you agree to these terms and to our privacy policy.

Your account

You sign in with Google, Apple or a link sent to your email. Keep access to that account safe: whatever is done while signed in counts as done by you. You must be at least 13 to use Matey. You can delete your account at any time in Settings.

Free and Bro

Matey is free to use. The Free plan includes:

• 5 active groups you create — groups you’re invited to don’t count;
• 1 public wishlist to share, and any number of private ones;
• unlimited expenses, payments, friends and wishes, including wishes filled in from shop links.

Bro is our paid subscription. It removes these limits: unlimited groups and public wishlists. Bro costs €2.99 a month or €19.99 a year. Prices may include or be followed by local taxes, shown before you pay. Bro may not be available for purchase in every country.

Paying for Bro

• On the website, purchases are processed by our reseller Paddle.com, which is the Merchant of Record for those orders. Paddle handles the payment, invoices, sales tax and refunds, under its own buyer terms.
• In the iOS app, Bro is sold through Apple’s In-App Purchase and charged to your Apple ID. Apple’s terms apply to that payment.

Bro renews automatically at the end of each month or year, at the price then in effect, until you cancel. We’ll tell you before any price change applies to you. You can cancel at any time: on the web from the link in your receipt or by emailing us, in the iOS app in your iPhone’s Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions. Cancelling stops the next renewal; Bro stays active until the end of the period you’ve paid for. One subscription works on the web and in the app.

When Bro ends

When Bro ends, nothing you made is deleted. Groups stay as they are; you just can’t create or restore groups beyond the Free limit until you have fewer. Public wishlists stay public for 7 more days; after that, only the most recently edited one stays public and the rest become private — visible to you, hidden from friends. If you come back to Bro, they become public again.

Refunds

You can get a full refund within 14 days of your first Bro payment. Details are on the refund policy page.

What you put in Matey

Your expenses, wishlists, wishes, pictures and links stay yours. You give us permission to store and show them only as needed to run Matey — for example, to show a wishlist to the people you share it with. When you add a shop link, Matey may fetch the name, description, price and picture from that page for you; check them before relying on them, as shops change their pages and prices.

Please don’t use Matey to:

• break the law or infringe anyone’s rights;
• harass people or share content that is abusive, hateful or sexually explicit;
• upload malware, or try to break, overload or get around the limits of the service;
• access other people’s data or accounts without their permission.

We may remove content or suspend an account that breaks these rules. If we do, and you paid for Bro, we’ll refund the unused part unless the breach was serious.

Splitting is a calculator

Matey helps you keep track of who owes whom. It doesn’t move money, and the balances it shows are based on what members enter. Exchange rates for expenses in other currencies are indicative. Settling up happens between you and your friends.

The service

We work to keep Matey available and your data safe, but the service is provided “as is” and may sometimes be unavailable or change. We may add, change or remove features; if we remove something you paid for, we’ll give you a fair refund. To the extent the law allows, we aren’t liable for indirect losses, and our total liability is limited to what you paid us in the 12 months before the claim. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have as a consumer that can’t be waived under the law of your country.

Changes and law

If these terms change, we’ll update this page and the date at the top, and tell you in advance about changes that matter. These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of Cyprus. If you live in the EU, you also keep the protection of the mandatory consumer law of your country and can bring a claim there.
