Matey helps friends split shared expenses and share wishlists. This policy explains what we store when you use Matey on the web at mateytheapp.com and in the iOS app, why, and what you can do about it. The short version: we keep only what the app needs to work, we never sell your data, there are no ads, and we don’t track you across other apps or websites.

What we store
- Your account. Your email address, the first and last name you sign in with or enter yourself, and the profile photo you upload. If you sign in with Google, also your Google profile picture, until you upload your own. We never see your Google password.
- Default currency. When you sign up, we pick it from your phone’s region, your browser’s language or the country of your IP address. We store only the currency, not your country or IP address, and you can change it in Settings.
- Splits. Groups you create or join, their members, expenses, shares and payments, with the descriptions, amounts, currencies and dates you enter, and the group’s activity feed.
- Wishlists. Your wishlists and wishes: names, descriptions, prices, links and the pictures you upload, and which wishes you have booked or marked as purchased. When you add a shop link to a wish, our server opens that page to fill in the name, description, price and picture: the shop sees a request from our server, not from your device. We keep only what you save, and count how many wishes you filled in from links each month.
- Other people you add. You can add a friend to a group by name only, without an account. We store just that name, so the group can count who owes whom.
- Usage statistics. Events such as “expense added” or “wishlist shared”, linked to your account ID, with counters and flags only — never names, emails, descriptions or amounts; for wishes filled in from a link, also the shop’s domain, to see which shops work. We use them to understand which features help and what to improve. Web pages additionally count anonymous visits without cookies.
- Subscription. If you buy Bro, we store your plan, until when it’s active and whether it was bought on the web or in the iOS app. We never see or store your card details: payments are handled by Paddle on the web and by Apple in the app.
- Notifications. If you allow notifications in the iOS app, we store your device’s push token with your account, so Apple can deliver them to you. The token is removed when you sign out, and you can turn each kind of notification off in Settings.
The iOS app keeps a copy of your groups and wishlists on your device so it works without a connection, and erases it when you sign out.
Who can see it
Members of a group see its expenses, payments, members and feed, with your name and profile photo. Your Circle lists only people you already share a group with or whose wishes you booked, and nobody can find you in Matey by searching. Who can open a wishlist depends on its availability setting; people you share its link with may see it and book wishes. To keep gifts a surprise, who booked a wish is never shown — not even to its owner. Nobody else sees your data.
Services we rely on
We don’t sell or rent your data. To run Matey, we use a few providers who process it on our behalf and only for this purpose:
- Supabase — database, sign-in and picture storage;
- Vercel — hosting of the website and the app’s server;
- Resend — sending sign-in emails and our replies to support (EU region);
- Cloudflare — receiving emails sent to our support address;
- PostHog — usage statistics (EU region);
- Paddle — our reseller for Bro on the website: payment, invoices and sales tax (it receives your email, country and payment details directly);
- RevenueCat — keeps track of Bro subscriptions from the web and the App Store;
- Apple — delivering notifications in the iOS app, sign-in if you choose Apple, and Bro purchases in the app;
- Google — sign-in, only if you choose Google; and the mailbox (Gmail) where we keep support emails.
Their servers may be located outside your country. If you email support, we keep your address and the conversation in that mailbox so we can answer you.
How long we keep it
We keep your data while you have an account. You can delete your account at any time in Settings → Delete account, on the web or in the app. This deletes your profile, sign-in, profile photo, wishlists, wishes and their pictures, bookings and invite links, and groups where you were the only member with an account. In groups shared with other people, you stay listed under your current name as a guest, so their balances remain correct; expenses and payments in those groups are kept for the other members.
Your rights
You can see and edit your name, photo and currency in Settings, and delete your account and data yourself. For a copy of your data, a correction, or any question about privacy, email us at the address below. Depending on where you live, you may also have the right to object to processing or to complain to your local data protection authority.
Children
Matey is not directed at children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect their data.
Changes
If this policy changes, we’ll update it here and change the date at the top.
